Nationally
Relay for Life is the national signature activity of the American Cancer Society. The event was started by Dr. Gordon Klatt, who held a one-man, 24-hour marathon in 1985. Since then, the momentum of Relay for Life has grown into 2,500 separate events, yielding $125 million for cancer control last year. Throughout the country, Relay volunteers celebrate life by honoring cancer survivors, remembering loved ones and educating the community about prevention and early detection.
Locally
2007 is the 9th year of the Relay For Life in Northern Chautauqua County. We started planning in 1998 and held our first Relay on Saturday June 19th, 1999 at SUNY Fredonia. 15 teams participated. June 10th, 2000 saw the Relay almost double in size, with over 30 teams involved. Each year since our Relay has continued to grow.
In 2006 our Relay raised over $75,000! To date we have raised over $375,000 and are looking forward to another wonderful Relay on June 9th and 10th, 2007 on the track at SUNY Fredonia.
